Tiananmen Square is pretty massive. There's something appealing about the open space and the scattered bursts of red. And, I was told that there are numerous plain clothes police officers milling about the square. I entertained myself by looking at different people around me, trying to determine whether they were undercover or not. I saw men offering to take photos for a fee, women selling random items, little girls with school backpacks, and a lot of tourists. I determined that everyone was undercover, and they were all monitoring me and my friend. Even if I was wrong, it made the experience more exciting.
Security was especially tight at Tiananmen, aka the Gate of Heavenly Peace, where the big picture of Mao is. There was this security guy in plain clothes, standing next to a uniformed soldier. Both were looking intently at the crowds for any suspicious behavior. And of course, random questions pop up for me like, "How come this guy gets to wear comfy clothes?"I may never know the answer to this question. But I despaired not, because I was on vacation, and it was really fun taking pictures with James, with our masks on.
(Can you tell we were laughing?)
